Fuctional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine. In hopes of better addressing the healthcare needs of the 21st century fucntional medicine treats the body and organs as a whole. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional health addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Furthermore, it makes sure to keep the organs functioning at optimal capacity as opposed to traditional medicine which may prescribe prescription drugs that deter the organs from working optimally. This is due to the organs having to work harder to break down whatever medicine is being taken. As a result, while symptoms may improve over time, the body is actually getting weaker which can lead to more complications and expenses down the line.
At Colorado Medical Solutions, we address the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engages both patient and physician in a therapeutic partnership. Practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, the functional approach supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
The focus is on patient-oriented care, promoting health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease. By listening to the patient and learning his or her story, the practitioner brings the patient into the discovery process and tailors treatments that address the individual’s unique needs.
As Functional Medicine Doctors in Denver, Colorado, we help with a number of diseases and conditions including but not limited to:
We integrate traditional Western medical practices with what is sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise. In addition, we make use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques. Furthermore, as integrative health and functional medicine doctors, we make use of both worlds of medicine. Patients may be prescribed the following combinations:
Meet Carol Van DeMore. One of our functional medicine patients was nice enough to share her experience working with us on the functional medicine side of our practice. Carol has been working with us for a little bit past a year now. Carol’s main issue was seeing conventional doctors where they just didn’t seem to help. I thought well, I think we’ll try this doctor. He does functional medicine and I think maybe this could be something for me and when they gave you the diagnosis IDs which by the way as you probably know by now, you’ve heard me talk IBS is just it’s just a list of symptoms. Right? Did they give you treatment with that one?
The doctors put Carol on prescriptions and she was on them until she started working with Colorado Medical Solutions’ functional medicine program. People are commonly confused on what could be so different about working with a functional medicine doctor as opposed to a conventional practice. Well first, what varies greatly is the testing. Functional Medicine runs a number of more in-depth testing on and it was found that Carol had something called H pylori. She had never been diagnosed and once it was discovered, no prescriptions were used.
Dr. Jones used natural herbs as part of the protocol which proved highly effective. It took a few months and we finally got that taken care of. Next was the breath test which Carol had never had with her original doctors. Even after seeing Dr. Jones, she went back to her conventional doctors and took these tests again. They kept telling her no, you don’t have i H. Pylori yet, but with Dean, It kept showing up. “Yeah, and you (Dr. Jones) noticed obviously, I think the most important thing.” Carol explains. Ultimately, we were able to get the IBS symptoms to completely subside. A test is only as good as what the results can do for you. Once we identified the bug, those IBS symptoms improved dramatically. Colorado Medical solutions was able kill the bug that Carol’s doctors had informed her she never had to begin with.
